A look at what’s going on this week in the literary world across the country:
Alaska Book Festival in Fairbanks, AK (June 11-13) - A celebration of the literary arts with a little something for everyone: a book-making class, a screen-writing workshop, storytime for the kids, author readings, and opportunities to learn about Alaskan history. Most events will take place on the University of Alaska campus.
Anne Frank: The Diary in Los Angeles, CA (June 11, 7:30 p.m. and June 14, 7:00 p.m.) – In honor of what would have been Holocaust victim Anne Frank’s 80th birthday on June 12, the Museum of Tolerance will present Asli Bayram, a Turkish-German actress, reading from Frank’s immortal diary.
Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival in McCook, NE (June 12-13) – Located in the prairie heartland, this event is a marriage of the literary and performing arts, with folk music, a cabaret, tales about local sports legends, a chance to share your favorite ghost stories at an open mic, and more.
Rose City Used Book Fair in Portland, OR (June 12-13) – A self-professed “unpretentious book fair,” this gathering of 33 booksellers will showcase used, antique, collectible, and even miniature books (tiny in size, gigantic in charm). The event will include appraisals and seminars.
Terror Among the Tombs: The Fall of the House of Usher in Baltimore, MD (June 13, 6:00 p.m.) – Take part in the celebration of Nevermore 2009, Baltimore’s yearlong bicentennial of Edgar Allan Poe’s birth, by sitting in Westminster graveyard for a theatrical performance of Poe’s classic horror tale. The emcee for the evening will be Frank the Body Snatcher, and various Poe characters will mingle with the audience throughout the night.
